Students have the option to enroll in one of two book art class options:
STUDIO LIFE AND HISTORY
The book is one of the first writing and communication systems around the world. We will study this art form from various perspectives and cultural influences. From the scroll and tablet, to printing press and zine. Students are encouraged to explore hand made and digital design techniques.
Option 1: Book Art Codex Led by Jennaway Pearson This course explores the codex, and we will learn techniques to sew traditional and contemporary book bindings. This course will focus on both structure, and content building with discussions on zines and artists’ books. Students will have ample opportunity to explore ideas in content though print, text, and collage. This course is appropriate for anyone looking for a conceptual and practical approach to book forms, emphasis in this class will be on process and experimentation.
Skills Acquired:
Exploration of conceptual thinking in terms of the book: structure, sequence, image + text
Understanding techniques for a variety of sewn and glued bindings
Familiarity with a variety of materials used in book binding
Knowledge of conceptual and perceptual aspects of the book and paper craft
Option 2: Sculptural Book Investigations Led by Sondra Graff
What is a book? Is narrative contingent on physical structure? This course is appropriate for anyone looking for a conceptual and practical approach to paper art forms. Learn to fold, cut, and assemble paper into structural shapes while exploring multiple book forms. Students will be encouraged to develop a personal composite based on the structures learned integrated with a concept of their choice. We will make various paper art forms along with small art books.
Students will increase their tactile and visual awareness in relation to book forms. We work to develop a broader understanding of the far reaching artistry in book structures.
