Design patterns and prints with experimental drawing and painting techniques. Led by Molly Aubry May 11 - May 24, 2018 [14 days]
Many patterns repeat throughout nature, from the cellular to the cosmic scale. We will source natural phenomena specific to Tuscany, and using our discoveries as inspiration, we will create fluid drawings and prints using a variety of materials and experimental methods. Students will learn several printmaking techniques, strengthen their understanding of color theory, and sharpen their drawing skills. Experimentation and serious play will be encouraged.
Deepened understanding of pattern
Advanced color theory
Technical knowledge of printmaking without a press
Sharpened drawing and design skills
Openness to experimentation and alternative processes
STUDIO LIFE AND HISTORY
Patterns exist from the micro to macro scales throughout nature, and are created by humans through architecture, design, textiles, crafts, and art. Merging the geometric and organic, patterns reflect the organization of life. Pattern will be investigated in many forms through observing natural and built structures in Italy and through drawing, photography, and printmaking. We will discuss the history, meaning, and associations of different patterns, and students will learn to use them creatively in their own practice.
