Letter from AIP

Now, more than ever, we need to be aware and connected to our world. Artist Immersion Program offers a different approach to seeing and connecting to the world through learning and making. We look to connect, not separate from the environment around us. We develop sensitivity and listening, not isolation and separation. We build a community of individuals bonded through the process of learning. Traveling to artistic sites, we redefine our world as a place where life and art unite. Each program cultivates a community of artists, makers, and thinkers that celebrate the everyday, and its infinite potential.

AIP was started to design immersive learning experiences that crossed borders and disciplines. We believe in deep learning. We believe that travel allows us to see the world differently. We celebrate the practice of traditional art-making forms, foundational drawing, and painting, along with contemporary art forms, from music to film. We explore traditional ways of making art alongside generating new formats. We travel as an expanding community- our staff, teachers, and participants leave transformed.

We believe that learning evolves from the classroom and studio; into walks, hikes, and conversations over dinner. Critical conversation, new perspective, developed sensitivity and poetics of space and time, permeate the everyday. Connection to nature and history allow for new ways of seeing and growing- for artists, students and professionals of all kinds to maximize creative capacity. At AIP, the experience is holistic. Join us around the world.

“Nothing has such power to broaden the mind as the ability to investigate systematically and truly all that comes under thy observation in life.”

- Marcus Aurelius

“Observe constantly that all things take place by change, and accustom thyself to consider that the nature of the Universe loves nothing so much as to change the things which are, and to make new things like them.”

- Marcus Aurelius

“Traveling – it leaves you speechless, then turns you into a storyteller.”

- Ibn Battuta

“Nothing can be compared to the new life that the discovery of another country provides for a thoughtful person. Although I am still the same I believe to have changed to the bones."

- Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

"I loved going to see all of the small towns around the villa that we stayed at in Italy. It was so much more relaxing than going to Rome and I think those smaller towns told me more about Italian culture than the big cities ever could have. We were exposed to grassroots culture."

- Aiden, 2016

"India taught me to look at pattern and color differently. Making with master craftspeople, who value making and handcrafts was humbling. I have so much to learn, and came away with new skills and ideas."

"I was proud of the fact that the way I see changed. It’s so easy to see everything as ordinary, but when you look at something as abstract, it all falls apart then comes back together. I know I became a better artist, designer, and person because I can appreciate more."

- Student, 2014

"The program was really organized but always artful. I never felt stressed. I didn't have to think about food or transportation- just making art and thinking deeply. I try to remember this working back at home.I feel really lucky I chose such a great program"

- Student, 2015

"The program helped me see the world in a different light – colors now make sense and I am able to look at anything and find some type of beauty in it."

- Nina, 2014

"It truly an immersive experience. You aren’t just visiting the big tourist locations that every traveler gets to see, you are exploring the smaller locations and really getting a feel for different areas and what it’s like to be someone in the country. We were guided to see things, and try foods and wines we never might have if we were traveling without experts."

- Student, 2015

"Effortless learning, experimenting, interactions with multiple people in different disciplines adds to the artist as a person in terms of learning to deal with struggles in his working process and expand his horizons."

- Student, 2018

"The best part of the Artist Immersion Program for me was being in a really lovely community of some of the nicest people I've ever met. And the independent travel opportunities were great too."

"Live with enthusiasm. There is still something out there that can inspire. You never know where it's going to come from. Apathy doesn’t get you to India."

Jemme, 2019

"Learning so much about myself and 2 great friendships, experience, a reminder of why I started doing this and my passion, networking and meeting interesting people."

- AIR, 2018

"Effortless learning, experimenting, interactions with multiple people in different disciplines add to the artist as a person at Artist Immersion Program. We learned to deal with challenges in our work and expand our horizons. "

- Student, 2018

"I had an incredible experience that I will never forget in Jaipur, India with the Artist Immersion Program. I pushed myself out of my comfort zone and was rewarded with wonderful friendships, mentors, and experiences... as well as a total shift of perspective on design. Studying textile design from masters of the craft in the vibrancy of India was a journey that I will never forget. I am a better student and designer after my time with this organization. The course load was challenging in the best way - it pushed my thinking and opened my eyes to so many new avenues of design. I felt the freedom to work with my own style while merging the teachings from this new culture. I loved the opportunity to create pieces that represented the trip and my experience. I would recommend this program to every student in design - it will broaden your perspective and give you a study abroad experience you will never forget!"

- Student, 2019

"The best part of Artist Immersion Program is the interaction with students and faculty. Time removed to focus, create art and engage in dialogue in a beautiful environment. Seeing/discussing the work of the artists in residence."

- Student, 2018

"I had an unforgettable experience and I am so happy I went."

- Student, 2018
